Dr.Gans, a Fellow of the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and a Clinical Associate in Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Dr. Gans is a member of the Board of Directors of AGPA and the Editor of its newsletter, The Group Circle. He runs the Training-group (T-group) for the PGY2 –PGY4 psychiatric residents at the MGH-McLean combined residency program. He is a supervisor at the Center for Psychoanalytic Studies at the MGH. Dr. Gans has 39 years of experience leading groups and has published widely on group and individual psychotherapy, psychological aspects of physical rehabilitation, liaison psychiatry, and psychotherapy and literature. He has lectured, supervised, presented workshops and run demonstration groups locally, nationally, and internationally on a variety of group psychotherapy topics.
Dr. Gans believes that group therapy offers a unique, safe and trusting environment in which to work on those internal difficulties that interfere with or compromise authentic connections with other people.
