Dr. Gans is a Distinguished Life Fellow of both the American Psychiatric Association and American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA). He is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and a Clinical Associate in Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). He is Co-Chair of the Fellowship and Awards Committee of the AGPA. For the last 20 years he has run the T-Group for the PGY2-PGY4 psychiatric residents at the MGH/McLean combined residency program. Dr. Gans has 40 years experience leading groups and has published widely on group and individual therapy, psychological aspects of physical rehabilitation, liaison psychiatry, and psychotherapy and literature. He is a supervisor at the Psychoanalytic and Couples and Family of New England. He has lectured, supervised, presented workshops, led institutes and demonstration groups locally and nationally and internationally on a variety of group psychotherapy topics, His first book, Difficult Topics in Group Psychotherapy: My Journey from Shame to Courage. was published by Karnac Books of London in 2010.
